I have kind of grown obsessed with the embroidery trend lately and as you will be able to tell from my future outfit posts!

I find that the delicate patterns of embroidery add a nice touch to any item of clothing. As you can tell from my picks I prefer floral patterns, especially red ones. The jeans, skirt and dress are an example of this. The embroidery on the each side creates a lovely effect on the somewhat plain items. Lace and embroidery are two which go really well together so I fell in love when I saw this dress. I also think that purple toned floral embroidery looks lovely. I have been on the hunt for an autumn bomber jacket lately so that's the reason why I picked this one. On the other hand I also like gold embroidery patterns just like the flats and bag. The geometric pattern on the bag is a bit different to what I went for with the other picks but it's still a gorgeous piece. The flats are so cute and I couldn't resist not adding them. They would be perfect for everyday wear or for more formal outfits.

In totally unrelated news, I have some important exams coming up next week so please forgive me if I miss a post or two. You may have noticed that I have not been responding to comments or returning them and this is the reason why! It's been quite a hectic few weeks lately with all the studying and I can barely remember the last time I saw the light of day (Not really but you get what I'm saying) *cry emoji*

Which item would you pick?

Essence cosmetics makeup look

If you have been reading my blog for a long time you will have noticed my love for Essence cosmetics. I love this brand for their affordable yet high quality beauty items. I have been using their products for a long time and my first makeup bits where by this brand. Last year I took part in a lucky dip type event so I have collected a fair amount. Today I decided to create a look just using products from this brand and this is the result.

Essence cosmetics makeup look products

Okay, I have to say that I kind of cheated since I used a foundation and concealer that I always use. My skin is prone to breakouts and when I find base products that work I don't change them in the hope of getting less pesky pimples. Also please excuse my frizzy hair and shiny, red face. It is currently very hot and humid here! So let's get into the actual products that I use.

After applying foundation and concealer I applied the mattifying compact powder in pastel beige all over my face. I have had it for a year and used it nearly everyday and I still have not hit the pan. I don't know how it's possible but it makes me like it even more. As I blush I used the liquid blush in waka waka. It was part of a limited collection so I don't think that's it's available anymore. If you come across it definitely pick it up since it's a lovely cherry shade and a little bit goes a long way. At first it does look a bit intimidating but upon blending with a brush or fingers it turns into a natural pink colour.

Brows are next. I was actually going to apply the clear brow gel only since I did not have any other products to fill them in with. Then I decided to try to fill them in with the black eyeshadow. This could have gone really wrong (black slugs is not a look that I go for) but the experiment turned out okay since the shadow is not too pigmented. I finished off with the clear brow gel to help keep my brows in place.

For the eyes I decided to go for a light smokey eye. This is not what I usually apply since I'm more of a warmer toned eye look kind of person. The palette that I used is this quattro eyeshadow palette in xoxo that I got aaages ago. I started out by applying the silver all over the lid and the black in the outer corner. With a fluffy brush I blended everything nicely and finished off with a little bit of the white in the middle of the lid and under my brow bone. Using a pencil dome brush I blended a bit of black eyeshadow along my lower lash line. For my eyeliner I applied the superfine eyeliner pen which is a holy grail in my everyday routine. A quick coat of the maximum definition volume mascara finished the eyes.

The xxxl longlasting lipgloss in baby doll's favourite completes the look. It is a lovely coral pink shade and prefect for spring and summer. I had actually forgotten about this for a long time after wearing it nearly everyday but I have recently rediscovered it.

Overall I'm quite happy with how the whole look turned out and I love the eyeshadow. As I said it's not what I usually go for and I was kind of experimenting with it.

Which Essence products do you recommend?

top 5 summer polishes, Essence, H&M, Kiko, Cien, Bershka

During summer I tend to go for lighter nail polish shades and I prefer pastel ones over really bright ones. In today's post I rounded up my favourites which I have been wearing throughout this summer.

top 5 summer polishes, Essence, H&M, Kiko, Cien, Bershka
top 5 summer polishes, Essence, H&M, Kiko, Cien, Bershka
Kiko 375 Bois de Rose // Bershka pastel nail polish set // Cien 36 silver shine // H&M  baby blue // Essence 06 baby doll

My favourite of them all is the Kiko polish. I love this shade of pink mauve and I like it so much that nearly all of my lip products and blushes are like this. When I'm looking for a more subtle look I reach for the Essence polish. It is not as opaque as the other shades but I like that is has a hint of shimmer in it. The sky blue shade from H&M is another summer favourite. It has a slightly matte finish to it which I really like since I don't have any other polishes with this look. For a more 'out there' look I either go for the Cien nail polish which has a metallic look or for the Bershka blue polish with neon pieces. This is unusual for me to like since I much prefer simple nail looks but I think that I can get away with it during summer.

What are some of your favourite summer shades?

why i prefer to shop online, online shopping

I love shopping and I love clothes. I mean, who doesn't? Being surrounded by rows upon rows of items is a kind of heaven to me. But shopping in busy shops can sometimes be a bit overwhelming for someone who gets stressed easily and is a bit too shy.

1. People

As a shy and awkward person I'm not really a fan of the atmosphere in overcrowded shops. All the people walking around from rack to rack and loud talking makes me feel a bit nervous. Now don't get me wrong. I know the nice sales assistant is trying to help me but I can't handle the extra pressure of talking to her while trying to decide what to go for. Sometimes it's nicer to ask google for help in order to not have any awkward social interactions.

2. Decisions

I'm horrible at deciding. Most times I will go around the shop quite a few times until I make a decision on what to choose. I usually end up getting stressed and that's why I prefer to shop online. I can go back to the same dress 4,5 or even 6 times before deciding to add it to the cart.

3. Packages

I love opening packages full of clothes or makeup and going through everything one by one. It nearly feels like Christmas has come early. Also, who doesn't love the convenience of getting their shopping at their doorstep?

4. The changing rooms

I honestly dread the changing rooms. The queues, the dodgy cubicle curtains, the mirrors, the lighting and the mess inside. I would much rather not try the clothes than letting some random woman see me flash my thigh from between the lopsided curtains. I also hate the process of trying on the clothes. I usually get really frustrated while trying them and end up rejecting nearly all of them because I think that they look awful when they actually look fine.

5. Time

Imagine going to the shops for a quick browse in the middle of the night in your pjs! You can never do this in real life but you can online. You can also go back to shopping anytime you want. I love that I can do this from the comfort of my own home at any time, be it 3 in the afternoon or 3 at night!

PS. What Sarah Writes has had a makeover! I have been thinking about getting a refresh for a long time and after countless hours browsing on Etsy I decided on this one. I hope that you like the new layout as much as I do.

Where do you prefer to shop?

5 Reasons Why I Prefer to Shop Online

Wednesday, 10 August 2016

Last week I shared a post on 10 things to do in London and today I am dedicating a whole post on the makeup and other bits and bobs that I bought while there. I have only been using these items for about a week so these are only my first impressions and more in depth reviews will come your way sooner or later.

I also bought quite a lot of clothes (I mean how can you not buy a lot when you are surrounded by so many amazing shops?!) Although I have decided against doing a whole post on them. You will hopefully be seeing them in future outfit looks.

 Accessorize Rings - £4.50 (similar)

While walking along the lovely streets in Camden, me and my mum saw that there was a sale in Accessorize and we both decided to go and have a look. I found this set of assorted rings (that was missing a few) which was half priced and decided to buy it. Now I am not such a fan of rings but I think that these are so cute. Obviously I won't wear them all at once but I will probably wear more rings from now on.

In the H&M home section on Oxford Street I found this really cute pineapple ornament which I later found out that it was in fact a candle. I immediately picked it up as I thought that it would be perfect for blog photos (I don't know if I ever stop thinking about my blog!). I also saw a really cute glass box with metal edges but I decided against it as it would have not made it back home in one piece!

In Camden we also spotted a Boots and I basically bought nearly all the beauty bits featured in this post from there. I think that this brow pencil is one of my favourite purchases. Till now I did not have any "proper" brow products and just used an eyeshadow that matched my eyebrows. This pencil makes it so easy and quick to fill in and shape and I also love that it comes with a brush on the other end.

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water - £3.00

I have heard a lot of mixed reviews about this but I decided to try it out anyway. I find that it's great for refreshing your face after a long, hot day and removes makeup really well. Even mascara and eyeliner although I am not sure about the 200 uses claim.

Benefit Gimme Brow - £18.50 (full version)

On the last day I decided to purchase a magazine to read during the flight back home. I immediately noticed that Glamour had a Benefit Gimme Brow sample and I had to get it. When else could I get another opportunity to try it for only £2 along with a magazine?! First of all, the packaging is gorgeous. Just look at it! Second of all, I was kind of let down. I found that the shade is a bit too light for my brows and when I apply the product it kind of makes me washed out. On top of that I left the magazine in the hotel room so I never got to read it. What a deeesaster!

While browsing the books in a book store I came across a section of books about London so I decided to buy some as a souvenir. 'I never knew that about London' is a collection of short facts and stories about the places of interest around the River Thames. It is more of a coffee table book as you can open a random page and read a random fact about a particular place. On the other hand 'London Stories' is a collection of short stories by different authors from 1603 till 1999 dealing about that time period. I am not a really big fan about this book as the earlier stories are written in an older version of English and are harder to read.

Primark Blender Sponges - £1.50 (similar)

I didn't get to go through all the Primark beauty and home sections but I managed to pick up these blender sponges which are essentially a cheap version of the beauty blender. I don't have any sponge applicators to compare them to but till now I haven't found any problems with them. They make application easier and leave a really natural finish when applying foundation.

Since I had forgotten to pack an antibacterial gel I decided to pick up this one from Boots. It feels very refreshing once applied and also smells really nice while not being overpowering. Another thing that I like is that a little amount goes a long way.

Upon first applying this I noticed three things about me. Firstly, I am horrible at filling in my lips. Second, my lips are horribly dry and third, I have an obsession with nearly the same nude colour. Apart from that I quite like it. It does not feel too uncomfortable on the lips, dries quickly and stays on even after eating (although reapplying is a better idea).

I am a really big fan of felt tip eyeliners and I usually stick to the Essence one but I decided to try something new. Since Soap & Glory is not available in Malta I picked up this one. It has a really nice tip that allows precision and perfect for creating a neat cat eye. I also love that it has very dark ink.

Natural Collection SunTint Bronzing Pearls - £1.99 (Tropical Tan)

I have been seeing a lot of products from this brand being featured on other people's blogs so I was really interested in trying them out. I picked up these two products. One is a blush and the other is a blush/bronzer/highlighter mix. I was most excited to try out the latter as it is not something that I previously owned and it looks so pretty! For only being £1.99 each, I was pleasantly surprised by their quality and colour pay off.

I left the best thing for last. Since Lush products are not available in my country I spent a really long time in the shop looking at everything and in the end I only chose one item. This Lush bubble bar has one of the nicest smells and I'm so excited to use it. Although  really don't want to break it up yet as I don't know when I will get to try Lush products again!

Have you tried any of these products?
