The 'Perfect Body'

Fat shaming, body positivity, the perfect body

How is your weekend going? Today I am going to talk about something a little different than what I usually write about. But it's something that I wanted to get off my mind.

I was just scrolling on Facebook when a photo of Selena Gomez popped up. She was in a bathing suit which showed off her lovely body and I said to myself, I think that I am about the same size as her so if she's a celebrity and embracing her body then I am at a good weight. But then I went to the comments section and my heart just sank. Nearly all the comments were about her weight and saying "ew you're fat", "lose some weight", "you look really big" etc... This immediately made me feel insecure about myself as I had just compared myself to her.

Don't these people know that they are not only hurting her but many other women around the world who have the same body as her? I don't think that she even sees these comments so it hardly affects her. I also highly doubt that the people who said these awful things have the 'perfect body'. So why do they still do it?

I am a UK size 8/10 and I do sometimes feel that I am 'too big' as I look nothing like celebrities and models. But I know that I am fine and that it is all in my head. With all of this pressure to be 'perfect', a person cannot help to not feel right.

I don't think that it is a really good place where our culture is headed, where everybody needs to be the same and compares each other. I know that this contradicts what I said earlier but that is just an effect of constantly hearing these things.

And to finish off this post here's a quote by the ever fierce and funny Jennifer Lawrence who I definitely admire.

I am sorry if you weren't expecting this kind of post and that it was a little rambly but I needed to address this.

Thanks for stopping by :)

  5. Great post :) I'm a plus size girl and I always feel like I'm too big and looked down on. I wish the media would go away and stop the whole body shaming as there is NOTHING positive about it! People should embrace who they are instead of being scared and ashamed :)

  6. I totally agree with this! And there's always going to be different shops that have different sizing. For example I'm normally a 10 but had to buy a size 12 skirt. I will admit it made me feel prettyshite about myself. I started thinking I was fat and that I needed to loose weight. But it is all about being healthy and feeling comfortable about your body!xxx

  7. This is a very important post, Sarah! A lot of girls need to know that it's okay to be the size they are. We're shown so much in the media that is not true or attainable at all...It's always nice to read something like this to feel balanced again. Thanks for sharing :)

  10. Such an important point to make. Selena Gomez couldn't be any further from fat. But most importantly, nobody should be judging her anyway. It's scary how the media/world focus so heavily on body image :(

  19. I've been thinking about this a lot too Sarah! Have you seen Cassey Hoe's newest video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsL7W-GHhJA ) It talks about these issues. I can't imagine the scrutiny of being a celebrity or a YouTube fitness person because there are always people out there who want to bring you down and be a critic!! It just goes to show you how insecure they feel about themselves though...people who are positive and love themselves don't shame other people for their bodies. Just throwing that out there :)

  33. Celebrity and pop culture is definitely tainting our perception of "beauty" and like normal beings who react to information, we invariably get hurt by comments such as "you're fat" or "you're ugly." It's tough and it's disgusting. It's posts like these that help raise awareness of the issue, so thank you for writing this post!

    Stay beautiful!

This is a fab post! Completely agree, it is horrible to see people write such hurtful comments on pictures of people! It's sad to see that so many of us have grown up thinking that we're fat or overweight when really it is just our bodies being our bodies. xxx
